Arts Culture strengthens Diplomatic Relations

Jakarta - U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Scot Marciel said the mission of arts and cultural exchanges play an important role to strengthen diplomatic relations between the United States and Indonesia.

"Diplomatic relations between the two countries will be more closely if both parties understand each other their respective characters, art and culture will help the United States and Indonesia to mutually understand the character of each other," he said on the sidelines of the visit on the campus of the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI ) Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta, Thursday.

He said the mission of art and cultural exchange will help Indonesia to better understand the United States, and vice versa.

"Therefore, that is the cultural city of Yogyakarta in Indonesia became the first city that I visited after I was appointed ambassador to Indonesia," he said.

According to him, he visited Yogyakarta just two days after formally accepted by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as the representative of the Government of the United States in Indonesia.

"In addition, education is also a city of Yogyakarta in Indonesia, we will strengthen cooperation in the field of education with universities in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta," he said.

He said his visit to Yogyakarta, this time focused to establish talks about the importance of cooperation in education and culture.

"The Embassy of the United States will encourage the existing universities in the United States to more actively conduct student exchange programs and cultural exchange to Indonesia," he said.

Besides visiting the ISI campus, Scot Marciel also met with Governor of Yogyakarta Special Province of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, visit the Campus University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta and Central Yasa.
